The transport of chemicals, particles, and micro-organisms through soil is an important process involved in the fate of contaminants in environmental systems. In this context, preferential flow has shown to be more the rule than the exception at many study sites, increasing in particular the risk of groundwater contamination. Reliable assessment of potential risks resulting from the presence of hazardous substances in the environment requires a multidisciplinary approach, integrating interactions between physical, chemical, and biological processes, in preferential flow and transport phenomena. The workshop will seek to evaluate the current state-of-the art in this field, and to highlight the next challenges in preferential flow and transport research.

The workshop will be held in Ticino, Southern Switzerland, at the Centro Stefano Franscini, the international conference centre of ETH Zurich. The conference centre is beautifully located in Monte Verita, the hill above Ascona over-viewing the Lake Maggiore.

The primary motivation for the workshop is to honour the career of Hannes Flühler, by providing a first-class scientific event related to his (many) research fields. The workshop will thus have a wide interdisciplinary orientation and is intended to attract an international mix of both senior and junior scientists.

The workshop will consist of 4 days of oral and poster presentation, with time for round-table discussions and informal meetings.
